We’re excited to announce that we’ll be upgrading the default PHP version from PHP 7.4 to PHP 8.1 on the following servers, effective April 14, 2025. This upgrade will enhance performance and security for your websites.

Affected Servers:

  • Our Shared Hosting UK servers

What Does This Mean for You?

Currently, websites set to inherit their PHP version from the host server are running on PHP 7.4, a legacy version that is both slower and less secure. Starting the week of April 14, 2025, these sites will automatically transition to PHP 8.1.

If your website, CMS, or CRM has been updated within the last 1-2 years, it should be compatible with PHP 8.1 or higher, and you’re unlikely to experience any issues. However, we recommend testing ahead of time to ensure a smooth transition.

FAQs

Yes! You can take control and upgrade at your convenience by following these simple steps:

  • cPanel:
    1. Log in to your cPanel account.
    2. Navigate to the “Software” section and click MultiPHP Manager.
    3. Select your domain from the list.
    4. Choose your preferred PHP version (we recommend PHP 8.1 as the minimum).

    5. Apply the changes.

PHP 8.1 is our recommended minimum version for optimal performance and security. Your website may also support newer versions, including the recently released PHP 8.4.

What If My Website Goes Down After the Upgrade?

If your site experiences issues post-upgrade, it’s likely due to outdated or incompatible code. Don’t worry—you can revert to PHP 7.4 temporarily by following these steps:

  • cPanel:
    1. Log in to cPanel.
    2. Go to the “Software” section and click MultiPHP Manager.
    3. Select your domain.
    4. Set the PHP version back to 7.4.
    5. Save your changes.
  • DirectAdmin:
    1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
    2. Expand the “Extra Features” menu.
    3. Click Select PHP Version.
    4. Switch back to PHP 7.4.
    5. Apply the changes.

Once your site is operational again, we strongly recommend updating your CMS, CRM, or website code to ensure compatibility with modern PHP versions. Plan your upgrade to PHP 8.1 or higher as soon as possible to maintain security and avoid vulnerabilities.
